Echoes of Nature: A Study in Organic Texture, Fibre, and Gold Foil
"Stratum of Memory" is an emotional excavation, a contemporary mixed-media piece that explores the layers we accumulate through time and experience. Set within a contemplative white shadowbox, this artwork is a complex tapestry of light, shadow, and tactile reality.
The composition is built like an archaeological dig, revealing layers of color, decay, and beauty. I began with a foundational dialogue between saturated ochre, marked by subtle, patterned etchings, and void-like white fields. Layer upon layer of torn paper, representing fragments of history, are integrated into the surface.
Root-like dried fibres are placed delicately, signifying the persistent connection between the man-made and the organic, decay and growth. These skeletal structures are juxtaposed with a rhythmic, perforated textile pattern, a nod to human order within nature's chaos. Finally, veins of gold leaf and textured gold paint run through the piece like uncovered treasure, capturing light and transforming the composition into a living, reflective object.
This framed piece is an invitation to pause, observe, and find your own narrative within its layered surfaces.
